Suntech Power Holdings recently supplied solar panels for 19 remote schools in Lebanon working with local partner and Lebanese integrator Asaco General Trade and Contracting.
Sponsored and facilitated by the Country Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Demonstration Project for the Recovery of Lebanon (CEDRO), established through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the combined systems represent the largest solar initiative in Lebanon.
"Suntech is proud to support this initiative," said Nader Jandaghi, Suntech's Director of Middle East. "CEDRO's adoption of solar power for these schools will brighten the lives and enhance the learning of children who will define Lebanon's future. Together, we want to power a world where everyone has direct and dependable access to nature's most abundant energy resource."
Because of the locations of the schools in rural villages spread across the Bekaa Valley and Northern Lebanon, grid power can be intermittent and unreliable. In the past, teachers and administrators at these 19 schools have persevered through the blackouts; now they will be able to rely on the sun to provide classroom and library lighting as well as reliable access to a computer or fax/copy machine. Integrator Asaco designed custom systems using Suntech solar modules for each of the 19 schools, with power outputs ranging from 1.2kWp to 1.8kWp.
"This is the largest set of solar projects in Lebanon to date - not only in terms of power output but also because of the large number of sites spread across the country," said Mr. Ramzi AbuSaid, CEO of Asaco.
"CEDRO set reasonable and challenging system design objectives. We had to integrate several power sources at each site, including grid power, the solar systems
, and even diesel generators in some cases, and leverage each of their attributes to ensure that the schools have dependable power at all times. Each power system is very efficient and takes maximum advantage of the clean electricity generated through Suntech's high-performing solar modules."
"For more than 20 years, and ever since the war, electrical power failure in the public grid has been a chronic problem for us," explained Joseph Nakleh, Principal of the Anna Intermediate Public School. "We experienced blackouts on average for six to twelve hours each day. As a public school, we didn't have the budget to fund an alternative power source
, so over time we adapted to the frequent grid power failures. Unfortunately, this was affecting the quality of educational services that we strive to provide our students. The new system is not only an excellent solution since it finally solved our electricity issues, but it will serve as a tangible, everlasting example for our students about the good uses of green power."

Solar Electricity Goes Mainstream
David Egles, one of Canada's leading authorities on the solar industry, applauds the Green Energy Act passed in Ontario.

A complete 10-kilowatt system costs approximately $100,000; on a south-facing roof, it would generate approximately $9,600 each year in income.

Perpetual Power Installs PV System On Budweiser Facility
Perpetual Power has announced the completion of a 416kW DC solar installation on a Budweiser cold beer storage building in Contra Costa County, Calif. The Markstein Sales Company, a family owned business operating since 1919, and a distributor of Budweiser and other beverages, decided to install solar power on its facility to reduce its energy costs while contributing to the protection of the environment.
The solar system was designed and installed by San Francisco-based Perpetual Power, and is the first system to use their new proprietary "Oasis" roof mounting system.
The system was designed with minimal connections and a low weight per square foot to reduce stress on the building's rooftop. The new mounting system also passed a rigorous wind tunnel test to meet the requirements in this area and ensure stability and safety.
Paul Townsend, founder of Perpetual Power, LLC, commented on the new installation: "We continue to focus our solar installations on large commercial buildings in California, including this new building for Markstein Sales Company. We also focus on large agribusiness installations where solar power makes a real difference in lowering energy bills for these companies."
The solar installation includes 2,240 185Wp Mitsubishi Electric polycrystalline photovoltaic modules, made with 100% lead-free solder. Mitsubishi Electric modules were chosen due to their reputation for outstanding quality and high power output.
Antioch is in the eastern part of the Bay Area and typically experiences hot summer temperatures which drives up the energy requirements of a cold storage facility.
"A cold storage facility is an excellent example of a building that can gain immediate benefits from solar power," said Gina Heng, general manager of Mitsubishi Electric's photovoltaic division.
"Due to the high temperatures and amount of refrigeration required for this facility, solar panels can help the company shave off its most expensive tier it pays to the utility, resulting in immediate savings."
The system will cover approximately 60 percent of the 110k square foot building's energy needs and is estimated by climatecare.org to produce 600,000kWh resulting in a annual savings of approximately $100,000. Based on this estimation, the amount of carbon saved by installing the system is equivalent to driving over 22 million miles over the 25 year life of the system, or keeping 8,000 tons of CO2 from entering the environment.

Taiwan's solar stadium 100% powered by the sun
Taiwan recently finished construction on a solar-powered stadium that will officially open later this year to welcome the 2009 World Games. From Inhabitat, part of the Guardian Environment Network.
Taiwan recently finished construction on an incredible solar-powered stadium that will generate 100% of its electricity from photovoltaic technology! Designed by Toyo Ito, the dragon-shaped 50,000 seat arena is clad in 8,844 solar panels that illuminate the track and field with 3,300 lux. The project will officially open later this year to welcome the 2009 World Games.
Building a new stadium is always a massive undertaking that requires millions of dollars, substantial physical labor, and a vast amount of electricity to keep it operating. Toyo Ito's design negates this energy drain with a stunning 14,155 sq meter solar roof that is able to provide enough energy to power the stadium's 3,300 lights and two jumbo vision screens. To illustrate the incredible power of this system, officials ran a test this January and found that it took just six minutes to power up the stadium's entire lighting system!
The stadium also integrates additional green features such as permeable paving and the extensive use of reusable, domestically made materials. Built upon a clear area of approximately 19 hectares, nearly 7 hectares has been reserved for the development of integrated public green spaces, bike paths, sports parks, and an ecological pond. Additionally, all of the plants occupying the area before construction were transplanted.
Non-sports fans in the community have a lot to jump up and down for as well. Not only does the solar system provide electricity during the games, but the surplus energy will also be sold during the non-game period. On days where the stadium is not being used, the Taiwanese government plans to feed the extra energy into the local grid, where it will meet almost 80% of the neighboring area's energy requirements. Overall, the stadium will generate 1.14 million KWh per year, preventing the release of 660 tons of carbon dioxide into atmosphere annually.

Solar Power Contracted to Power Two Los Angeles Landmarks
Solar Power has entered into a design build agreement with venue owner-operators AEG to design and install photovoltaic solar systems for two of the world's best known sports and entertainment venues; STAPLES Center and NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE.
STAPLES Center serves as home to the L.A. Lakers, L.A. Clippers, L.A. Kings, L.A. Avengers and the L.A. Sparks, as well as a full schedule of special events and concerts featuring the most popular artists performing today.
NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE, which opened on October 18th, 2007 with six sold-out concerts featuring the Eagles and Dixie Chicks, is located directly across the street from the arena within the new L.A. LIVE sports, residential and entertainment district, and has already hosted the ESPY Awards, the American Music Awards and American Idol finals in addition to a full schedule of concerts, trade shows and special events.
Both venues are well known for their state-of-the-art technology, features and amenities that allow them to offer their guests the ultimate in live entertainment and sports experiences.
In addition to providing turnkey PV solar system design and installation services for the two facilities, Solar Power, Inc. will be installing their own line of PV solar modules featuring premium cells manufactured by Motech Industries, Inc., known for their superior performance characteristics.
When completed, the systems will deliver a combined 512 kilowatts of power, reducing the venues' utility-sourced electricity requirements and advancing AEG's sustainable energy practices.
Installation of the first system is scheduled to begin at the STAPLES Center in early October when the first of the 1,727 solar modules to power its new 345 kW PV solar system will be lifted 150 feet to the arena's roof.
When completed, approximately 24,196 square feet of STAPLES Center's roof will be covered with SPI's SP200 PV modules.
The solar arrays will become integrated with the venue's familiar, landmark 'surfboard" rooftop feature bearing the STAPLES Center name. SPI's system design will also feature SPI's innovative SkyMountTM racking system.
The installation of the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE's 167 kilowatt system is scheduled to begin in October soon after installation of the STAPLES Center system is underway. The 7,100 seat NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE will be home to 836 SPI photovoltaic modules covering approximately 11,663 square feet of its roof.

SolarCity Helps eBay Switch To Clean Power With Largest Commercial Solar Installation In San Jose
SolarCity has announced that it has completed the largest commercial solar power installation in San Jose on eBay's North campus. The 650 kilowatt (kW) installation -- including 3,248 individual solar panels -- spans 60,000 square feet on multiple buildings. The system will be unveiled later in a ceremony to recognize eBay's first building built to the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED gold standard.
SolarCity also announced a solar power benefits program for eBay employees. The SolarCity program can allow eBay employees to switch to clean, solar power for less money than it costs to remain on utility-based electricity with the SolarLease financing option, and also includes a discounted cash-purchase option.
"I was pleased that SolarCity was the first company to accept my challenge to offer San Jose residents a $0-down option for solar power, and now I'm delighted that they've teamed with eBay on the city's largest commercial solar installation," said San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed.
"Efforts from companies like SolarCity and eBay are helping San Jose become a leader in developing clean technology and adopting clean power, reducing our dependence on expensive, polluting energy sources."
SolarCity estimates that over the next three decades, eBay's solar system will offset 37 million pounds of carbon dioxide; the equivalent of planting 322 acres of trees. SolarCity also estimates that solar-generated power will save eBay approximately $100,000 in electricity costs within its first year of operation.
As with all SolarCity installations, the eBay system includes SolarGuard(TM), SolarCity's advanced solar monitoring system that measures and reports critical performance data to guarantee effective energy production over the system's lifetime.
